Stuart Sutcliffe (1940–1962) was an artist and musician best known as the original bass player and a founding member of The Beatles. A gifted painter and close friend of John Lennon, he helped shape the group's early image during their formative Hamburg years in 1960 and 1961. Encouraged by Lennon, he bought a Höfner 500/5 President bass and learned on stage night after night as the band found its sound, before leaving to concentrate on his art. His early death at just twenty-one sealed his place in music history as the original 'fifth Beatle', and for many fans he remains one of the most evocative figures of the group's beginnings.
