Ritchie Valens (1941–1959), born Richard Valenzuela in Los Angeles, was one of the first Latino stars of rock and roll. In a career that lasted barely a year he turned the traditional song 'La Bamba' into a worldwide hit and wrote the tender ballad 'Donna', inspiring countless musicians who followed. He famously refinished his Harmony H44 Stratotone in a rich Buick green in his school shop class, giving it a look as distinctive as his sound. His life was cut short in the plane crash of February 1959, remembered ever since as 'the day the music died', yet his songs and his green guitar remain enduring symbols of early rock and roll.
