Paul McCartney Hofner Union Jack Violin Bass Miniature Replica By Axman
The word 'Legend' is surely one of our most overused words, particularly in the worlds of music and entertainment, but in the case of Paul McCartney, it is safe to say that 'Legend' doesn't even begin to cover it.
As one of the two surviving members of arguably the most innovative and influential band in the history of modern Popular Music, Paul McCartney has certainly earned his rightful place in the Pantheon of iconic musicians and performers.
Born June 18th 1942, Sir James Paul McCartney CH MBE, gained worldwide fame as bass player, co-lead singer and songwriter with The Beatles, from 1961 - 1970, and has been a successful solo artist from 1970 - present. A self-taught musician, McCartney is proficient on guitar, drums and keyboards, but it is for his melodic and innovative approach to bass playing that he is most respected by fellow musicians.
Throughout the decades Paul Mc Cartney has being seen using pretty much any and every brand of bass guitar, but it is his 1963 Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass that is surely the most widely recognised and iconic. When he moved from piano to bass, after Stu Sutcliffe left The Beatles in 1961, McCartney bought his first Hofner Violin Bass, a 1961 model for $45 dollars in Hamburg. He used this bass exclusively until Hofner gave him a brand new model in 1963. The 1961 model was refurbished and kept as a back-up for his new bass. It remained with McCartney until being stolen from Abbey Road in the late 60's.
The 1963 Hofner Violin Bass was used up to and during the famous Let It Be rooftop concert before finally being put into storage. The bass emerged again in 1989 when it was used by Elvis Costello on his Flowers In The Dirt album, and it has been used on the road by Paul McCartney ever since. It apparently still has the setlist from the last Beatles shows in 1966 taped to it's side.
There have, of course, been countless re-issues and replicas of the McCartney Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass over the years, and keenly priced examples are relatively easy to find, if you fancy a bit of that Beatles vibe.
