Tom Petty (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) - 1965 Rickenbacker 360 12 Fireglo Miniature Guitar

Thomas (Tom) Earl Petty was born in Gainesville Florida on October 20th 1950 and died on October 2nd 2017, from an accidental overdose of prescription medication.

Petty was best known as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and as frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with whom he found fame in the mid 1970's. In the late 1980's Petty was a founder member of super group The Travelling Wilburys, which counted among it's members such legends as Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

Petty's interest in Rock n' Roll was stirred at the tender age of 10 when he met Elvis Presley. His uncle was working on the set of Presley's movie, Follow That Dream, and he invited the young Tom along to watch the shoot. The meeting was to change the young Petty's life and set him off on his musical journey. Like thousands of other aspiring young musicians, Tom Petty was also heavily influenced by seeing the Beatles' legendary appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. Seeing their performance made up his mind that being in a band was what he wanted to do above all else.

Petty used a wide ranging selection of guitars throughout his career, including Fender Stratocasters, Fender Telecasters, Gibson Flying Vs and some Gretsch models. From the late 70s onwards he began using Rickenbacker guitars, both 6 string and 12 string models. He even had his own signature Rickenbacker model, called the 660/12TP which he was heavily involved in designing, particularly the neck.

The Rickenbacker model that is most commonly associated with Tom Petty is his 1967 Fireglo Sunburst 360/12 and this guitar has featured on the cover of a few of his albums. The 360/12 is the classic sounding Rickenbacker electric 12 string, with its maple semi-hollow body, set neck, with rosewood fingerboard and distinctive fret markers. The pickups are a pair of Rickenbacker's own nickel covered single coils and there is certainly no other guitar that sounds as distinctive and instantly recognisable as a 'Ricky' 12 string electric.

That distinctive sound can be clearly heard on a great many of the fantastic songs that Tom Petty has left behind for us to remember him by.
