Eric Clapton Blackie Miniature Guitar Replica By Axman

Eric Patrick Clapton CBE was born on March 30th 1945 in Ripley England. He would go on to be one of the world's most renowned guitar players and to some of his most ardent fans, he would even be considered 'God'!

The young Clapton would discover the music of legendary American Blues players like Muddy Waters, Brownie Magee and Lightning Hopkins and from that moment he would dedicate his life and playing to his beloved Blues.

Although he would ultimately become associated with the guitar, Clapton used pretty much every make and model of guitar imaginable throughout his wide and varied career. During his Cream period in the mid to late 60s he was a confirmed guitar player, using Les Paul, SG, 335 and even Explorer models.

Clapton's struggles with drugs and alcohol during the 70s are well documented and it was after returning from one of his 'drying out' periods that the story of his 'Blackie' began. In 1974, while in Miami to begin recording his 461 Ocean Boulevard album he went into Sho-Bob music store in Nashville and bought six of the then totally out of fashion guitars for $200 each. These were vintage instruments and would be worth ten times that amount today. Giving one each of the guitars to Steve Winwood, Pete Townsend and George Harrison, he kept three himself, the best parts of which would go to make up 'Blackie'.

'Blackie' then, is a composite of three different 1956/57 guitar, comprising the body and scratch plate of one, the neck of another and the pickups of yet another one. This self-assembled guitar would go on to be Clapton's most used instrument right through the 70s and into the 80s, and it would survive with remarkably few alterations or repairs right up to it's retirement in the 90s.

In 2004, Clapton decided to auction a large part of his guitar collection to raise money for his Crossroads Foundation, 'Blackie' was one of the precious instruments he parted with. The guitar set a new world auction record for a guitar, selling for an unbelievable $959,500. Not bad for a DIY project!
