Brian May (Queen) Red Special: Miniature Guitar Replica
Brian May (Queen) - Red Special Miniature Guitar. Includes Display Box and Stand
When you are as academically gifted, obsessed with music, woodworking and practical electronics, as the young Brian May was, you were never going to settle for any old off the shelf guitar. Red Special, as May's unique guitar would be christened, was anything but a run-of-the-mill mass produced instrument.
With the invaluable help of his father, the teenage Brian May constructed the neck of Red Special from a 19th century mahogany fireplace. It even retained the woodworm holes which had to be filled in with matchsticks. The fingerboard was made from oak and the uniquely positioned fret marker dots fashioned from Mother Of Pearl coat buttons. The body was partly hollow and made from blockboard with inserts of mahogany and oak, so Red Special is ,in some respects, a semi-acoustic instrument. For the pickups May sourced a set of Burns Tri-Sonic single coils which were married to a very complicated six switch system which provided a bewildering amount of pickup position variations. The tremolo system is a real concoction of unlikely ingredients including a steel knife edge, two motorcycle valve springs and a bicycle saddle bag holder.
You could be forgiven for thinking that any guitar built in such an unorthodox manner using such unconventional materials would be doomed to failure, but anyone familiar with the music of Queen and Brian May's precise and faultless guitar playing will know the opposite is true. Red Special has been May's instrument of choice throughout his illustrious career, from his pre- Queen band Smile, which also featured Roger Taylor, right through his world dominating time with Queen.
There can be few guitarists in the Rock world whose sound is so instantly recognisable and inimitable, and the combination of Red Special, ultra light gauge strings and a sixpence for a pick make Brian May about as unique as it gets.
