Bob Dylan - Gibson SJ200: Guitar Miniature Replica (UK Seller)
Bob Dylan - Gibson SJ200 Miniature Guitar
Born May 24th 1941, Robert Allen Zimmerman (Bob Dylan) has been one of the most influential figures in popular culture for six decades.
Songs like Blowing In The Wind and The Times They-are-a-Changin' became anthems for the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements in the early to mid 60s. Those songs along with countless other Dylan compositions have been covered by hundreds of artists over the years.
Even though Dylan caused a furore among fans and critics alike in 1965/66 when he started to use electrically amplified instruments, it was for his acoustic material that he was most widely recognised. One of the acoustic guitars that Dylan used extensively and is strongly associated with, is his custom version of Gibson's venerable J200 model. The Dylan model was given an extra letter and called the SJ200. It also had a few extra appointments that the standard J200 didn't come with.
The main difference with the Dylan SJ200 was the material used in the body top construction. This was the rare Adirondack Red Spruce. The back and sides were made of grade AAA Flamed Maple, the neck was two-piece Maple and the fretboard inlays were Mother Of Pearl Bella Voce. The ornate double pick-guard was also decorated with Mother Of Pearl dot inlays. Instead of Gibson's normal flower design on the front of the headstock, Dylan's own 'Eye' logo was inlaid.
Dylan used quite a few Gibson acoustic guitars through the decades, including J180 and Hummingbird models but it was his highly ornate SJ200 that Gibson decided to use as their Bob Dylan Signature model. This was issued as a limited and highly expensive Custom Shop run in the 2000s, as well as a slightly more keenly priced Players Model, although this was still well out of most ordinary player's price range.
