J.P. 'The Big Bopper' Richardson (1930–1959) was an American disc jockey, singer and songwriter who became one of the most recognisable voices of early rock and roll. His 1958 hit 'Chantilly Lace', with its playful spoken-word style, made him a star, while behind the scenes he wrote hits such as 'White Lightning' and 'Running Bear' for other artists. On stage he favoured a large natural-finish round-shoulder jumbo acoustic guitar that suited the rhythm-driven roots of the era. His career was cut short in February 1959 in the same plane crash that claimed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, a night remembered ever since as 'the day the music died'.
